#BBUST - BYE BYE UNNEEDED SCREEN TIME!

HHHJ frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Child Safety Commitment

Happy Hobby Hour Junior (HHHJ) is a youth‑led social enterprise initiative developed by Deals Colony as a trial project. It was founded during COVID by a 10‑year‑old who wanted to help other young people turn screen time into skill time and spend meaningful time with their friends.

HHHJ activities are supported through the adult mentoring, governance and safeguarding oversight of Monika Kulshrestha, Founder of Deals Colony.

HHHJ is committed to providing safe, inclusive and supportive environments for children and young people. We recognise every child's right to participate safely in educational, entrepreneurial, media and community activities.

HHHJ seeks to implement child-safe practices aligned with Queensland's Child Safe Organisations framework, including:

  • child participation and empowerment

  • parent and family engagement

  • media consent and privacy protection

  • risk management and supervision

  • culturally safe and inclusive environments

  • complaints and feedback processes

  • continuous improvement of child safety practices

Parents, schools, councils, community organisations and partners are encouraged to work with us to help maintain safe and supportive environments for all young participants.

Media, Radio, TV and Public Engagement Opportunities

From time to time, HHHJ members may be invited or HHHJ may put forward members to take part in external media opportunities such as radio interviews, podcasts, TV segments or press features, to share their HHHJ journey and circular economy projects.

These opportunities are always:

  • Opt-in. Participation is always voluntary and a young person can withdraw at any point, including on the day.

  • Guardian-consented for under-18s. Where a participant is under 18, written parent or guardian consent is required before any confirmation is given to the media organisation, in addition to that organisation's own consent process.

  • Supervised. A nominated adult mentor (Monika Kulshrestha or an authorised HHHJ adult representative) is present or directly contactable for the duration of the activity.

  • Separate from social media consent. Consent for an external media appearance (e.g. a radio interview) is handled through our HHHJ External Media Participation Consent Form, which is separate from our standard HHHJ Media Consent form for HHHJ's own social channels. Both may apply depending on the activity.

If you are a school, council, media outlet, NGO or other organisation considering inviting an HHHJ member to participate in a public-facing activity, please contact us at support@dealscolony.com.au beforehand so we can confirm the required consent and supervision arrangements are in place.

2. What is a passion project?

A passion project is an initiative driven by a deep personal interest or enthusiasm. It is often started to address a specific issue or to achieve a particular goal that aligns with one's values and passions. For us, HHHJ began as a passion project to help children manage screen time and develop essential life skills.

Our Digital Wellbeing Program, formerly known as Screen Time Management, combines social support systems, educational initiatives, and community engagement. It offers three paid programs designed to address issues related to screen time and mental health.

4. What impact has HHHJ made so far?

We have raised $5,000 for sick kids, inspired over 500 youth, connected with more than 50 businesses, and built an online community of over 300 members. Our programs help students achieve their goals and provide a safe space to express their feelings and frustrations.

5. How does HHHJ support children's digital well-being?

We offer tips, tricks, and alternative screen time activities. Our program includes live videos and educational content to help children set goals, determine priorities, and achieve a balanced lifestyle.

6. What are the main issues HHHJ addresses?

We tackle social, school, and family pressures, media and social media influences, excessive screen use, lack of support systems, and socioeconomic factors. These issues can lead to mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and risky behaviors.

7. How can I get my child involved in HHHJ programs?

To enroll your child, visit our website or contact us directly. We offer various programs and workshops tailored to different needs, including digital well-being, life skills, and entrepreneurship.

8. How does HHHJ spread awareness about its programs?

We offer a sponsorship model designed to scale our programs globally and connect more kids together. By partnering with schools and businesses, we aim to expand our reach and bring our digital well-being and life skills programs to a wider audience. Sponsors can help fund program expansion, support local events, and create opportunities for kids in various communities. If you're interested in becoming a sponsor or learning more about our model, please contact us for detailed information.

11. What should I do if I have concerns about my child’s participation in media activities?

If you prefer that your child does not participate in live videos or media content, please inform us prior to their involvement. We will ensure that your child is not featured in any media content related to our programs.

12. What happens if my child (or I, as an 18+ member) is invited to take part in a radio interview, podcast or other media opportunity?

HHHJ will always let you know in advance, explain what the opportunity involves, and confirm who is supervising on the day. For participants under 18, we require written parent/guardian consent before confirming participation. For participants 18 and over, we ask for the participant's own informed consent. Either way, taking part is always optional, and you can change your mind at any time even on the day of the activity. If you have any questions about a specific opportunity, contact us at support@dealscolony.com.au before agreeing to take part.

13. Does it cost anything to take part in HHHJ activities?

Many HHHJ activities are free, as part of Deals Colony's Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to investing in the next generation. Where a program does involve payment, we discuss pricing upfront with families before any commitment is made, so participation stays mission-aligned and creates real opportunities for young people rather than being a barrier to them.

14. Who can I contact for more information?

For more information about our programs, sponsorship opportunities, or to discuss your child’s participation, please contact us through our website or email. We’re here to help and provide the support you need.
